The Lost Tribes

Meet Ben, April, Grace, Carlos and Serise.

Five friends who don't always get along. Now they're racing against time to solve a puzzle that holds clues to an even deeper mystery.

Ben Webster dreams of two things, making the basketball team and joining his globe trotting uncle, Henry, on a world expedition. But he faces two obstacles. He can’t play basketball, and his parents won’t let him tag along with Henry.

Ben’s life soon changes. After months of practice, his ball playing skills miraculously change and he’s a contender for the team roster. It is then Uncle Henry arrives and announces a challenge of his own. A digital game that involves tracking down ancient tribal artifacts hidden around the world. If Ben solves the game in seven days, he’ll earn the adventure of a lifetime: a place on Uncle Henry’s final expedition.

Ecstatic, Ben digs in only to be stuck on the first challenges, a hieroglyphic password, weird box codes, and booby traps. He’s forced to enlist his neighborhood friends, Grace Choeden and Carlos Lopez, for help. But it also means including his arch nemesis, Serise Hightower – an extraordinary hacker, and his obnoxious little sister April. Together the five rush to decipher the clues only to be blocked at every turn by their own parents. Working in secret, Ben and his friends soon discover the game clues point to an even bigger mystery, with the fate of the world and the known universe hanging in the balance.

"Well written and well paced. An exciting and unusual sci-fi series." -- Kirkus Review

Food Allergies

Food Safety

Review from Booklist: This entry in the True Book: Health and the Human Body series provides an accessible introduction to food allergies. Five chapters, each broken into titled subsections, cover topics that include allergies' effects on the immune system, deciphering FDA food labels, allergy testing, and treatments. A "Hidden Dangers" spread lists eight common allergens and where they can (sometimes unexpectedly) be found, such as wheat in hot dogs. Another page promotes cross-contamination vigilance, suggesting, for example, that milk-allergenic kids ask whether deli meat slicers are also used for cheese. Book and Web resources, along with a glossary and index, conclude this useful title. Grades 3-5.
