Food Allergies

Food Safety

Review from Booklist: This entry in the True Book: Health and the Human Body series provides an accessible introduction to food allergies. Five chapters, each broken into titled subsections, cover topics that include allergies' effects on the immune system, deciphering FDA food labels, allergy testing, and treatments. A "Hidden Dangers" spread lists eight common allergens and where they can (sometimes unexpectedly) be found, such as wheat in hot dogs. Another page promotes cross-contamination vigilance, suggesting, for example, that milk-allergenic kids ask whether deli meat slicers are also used for cheese. Book and Web resources, along with a glossary and index, conclude this useful title. Grades 3-5.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—On Easter morning, the farm animals begin work on a surprise for a little girl. They gather and paint the hens' eggs, decorate the barn, and leave a trail of brightly colored eggs across the yard. They indicate that they are awaiting a special friend. The child embraces the lamb, who is deemed "the best Easter gift of all." The text is a series of rhyming quatrains that narrate the action as the animals prepare for the party. The cartoon characters are made of soft colors set before a hazy barn background of warm yellow and orange tones. The lamb on each page and the girl's hat feature a raised flock material that adds a tactile element to the book. A festive addition for holiday collections.>—Laura Butler, Mount Laurel Library, NJ
