Food Allergies Food Allergy page

Food Allergies

Food Safety

Review from Booklist: This entry in the True Book: Health and the Human Body series provides an accessible introduction to food allergies. Five chapters, each broken into titled subsections, cover topics that include allergies' effects on the immune system, deciphering FDA food labels, allergy testing, and treatments. A "Hidden Dangers" spread lists eight common allergens and where they can (sometimes unexpectedly) be found, such as wheat in hot dogs. Another page promotes cross-contamination vigilance, suggesting, for example, that milk-allergenic kids ask whether deli meat slicers are also used for cheese. Book and Web resources, along with a glossary and index, conclude this useful title. Grades 3-5.
